Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (January 21, 2025) – This is a completely spoiler-free review!
Violet, Xaden, and the characters we’ve grown to love (plus ones I had to google because I totally didn’t remember them) are back, picking up very soon after the shocking conclusion of Iron Flame. They’re balancing attempting to complete their second year of War College while also being uniquely positioned to help uncover the means to save the continent from destruction – but they will have to sacrifice at every turn to save their world.
Were there way too many characters? Yep. Was the plot complex and, at times, hard to follow? Definitely. Did I inhale every page and totally love it? ABSOLUTELY. I loved the quest our riders go on over the central part of the book and how readers get exposure to more aspects of the continent. Each different culture they encountered pieced together some previously unknown part of one of our primary characters, bonded them even closer as riders and dragons, and made the epic, pulse-pounding battle all the more rewarding. There are tons of interesting twists that are revealed throughout the story that bring conclusions to several questions and open the floodgates for fascinating plot lines in the future.
🎧 About the Audiobook 🎧 With fantasy books, I almost always simultaneously do print and audio because my brain just needs to know how to pronounce the names and locations. I’ve really enjoyed all of the audiobooks in this series. For Onyx Storm, Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton return as the narrators, again giving pitch-perfect voices to Violet and Jaden (although almost all of the book is through Violet’s POV). Jasmin Walker and Justis Bolding also join as narrators in this book as we get some unique and essential additional POVs here.
