Flirting with Disaster by Naina Kumar (Jan 14, 2025) Thank you, Berkley Romance and PRH audio for the #gifted advanced digital and audio copies of this homage to Sweet Home Alabama!

Meena is a lawyer on the rise in DC. She’s got political aspirations, a shot at running for office, and a partner whose goals are the same. They could be the next political it-couple. The only problem? She’s got to get divorced from the husband she hasn’t seen in years. Young and in love years ago, Meena and Nikhil may have had too much to drink one night in Vegas and tied the knot. They made it last for a year, but their lives took them in different directions. Meena has come home to Houston for the first time in years to get Nikhil to sign the divorce papers, but she finds herself trapped with him in the house they once shared during a hurricane. As they are forced to spend time together, she begins to remember what she loved about Nikhil, their life, and herself when they were together. Ultimately, she’ll have to decide which version of herself she wants to be and who she wants by her side.

This was a cute second-chance romance. I struggled a bit with the “I didn’t realize there was a hurricane bearing down on Houston when I flew in” and the thought that someone with political ambitions would have to have an explanation for this marriage regardless of when the divorce happened (because, politics). I loved the elements of Indian culture and ambition. Particularly the idea that ambition can take many forms and success doesn’t always have to be what you’d imagined.
