Bourbon & Lies by Victoria Wilder – I’d been seeing this one everywhere, and it came highly recommended so I was thrilled when New Girls Book Club voted it our monthly read.
Laney’s life has just been turned upside down by being a good Samaritan. She’s swept away from her life in NYC by a federal agent for witness protection under very unique circumstances, and she finds herself starting a temporary new secret life in Frisco, Kentucky, on the compound that houses the Foxx Bourbon distillery, run by the family patriarch and his three grandsons. All of the Foxx men have experienced loss, with the town believing there is a Foxx family course where the women they love die. This is uniquely true for Grant Foxx, who left the police force after he couldn’t save the woman he loved. Even though he left the police force, he didn’t lose his police intuition. The story about how Laney ended up on their property isn’t holding water for him. He doesn’t trust her but can’t deny he is deeply attracted to her. But as Laney begins to make Frisco her home, Grant begins to soften to her, and what started as enemies to lovers may become the great love of his life – if Laney’s past doesn’t catch up with her first.
This one was SO MUCH FUN! I LOVED Frisco, Kentucky, and how Wilder wrote Kentucky. We lived there for many years, and she perfectly captured the magic of Kentucky, bourbon country, Modjeska candies, and the delicious glory of spoon bread. The Foxx family is so fantastic – you immediately connect with the joking barbs and deep love between these men who have experienced too much loss. I really liked Laney as a character, her connection to the Foxx family, and how she finds her place in Frisco. I wish we had had a little more about the terrifying drama that brought her there and how the events at the end were set in motion. A couple of threads surrounding her background and arrival also seemed unnecessary to me. That being said, I’m 100% in for the rest of this series and can’t wait to return to Frisco, Kentucky!
