A Killing Cold by Kate Alice Marshall (Feb 4, 2025) – A huge thank you to Flatiron Books and Macmillan Audio for the gifted advanced listening copy of this engrossing thriller. Starting this at 5 PM was a mistakeβI couldn’t stop listening and ended up sacrificing sleep to learn the outcome.
Theo and Connor were engaged after a whirlwind romance, and they’re now embarking on a two-week Christmas visit to his family’s remote mountain retreat, where she’ll meet Connor’s family for the first time. She knows that the impression she makes could make or break her standing with his incredibly wealthy family, and making a good impression will be even more challenging because Theo’s past is complicated – filled with a combination of horrific memories she wishes she could forget and complete gaps she’s resigned she may never remember. As she spends time at Connor’s family compound, she begins to feel an uncomfortable sensation that they’re being watched, and even more so, she starts to feel a deep connection to and familiarity with this place she’s never been – or has she? As complex and confusing memories surface, Theo becomes unsure of who she can trust and if this place may be the answer to her lost memories.
OMG – this one sucks you in and is unrelenting until the very last page. I had no idea who was telling the truth, who could be trusted, who was good, who was terrible, or who knew what. Still, Marshall kept pulling all the threads in an incredibly satisfying way that unveiled a complex web of lies and deception that made this one an absolute thrill ride.
π§ About the Audiobook π§ Can we all just agree that Karissa Vacker is one of the absolute queens of narration? This genuinely sounded like a full-cast narration, which was impressive because there was a whole big, messy, multi-generational family to voice. She made the fear palpable with her performance. It’s definitely worth selecting the audio for this one!
