Frank Szatowski, a Gulf War vet and UPS driver, has been estranged from his daughter Maggie for three years. So, when she calls him out of the blue to announce she’s getting married, he’s stunned. Maggie’s fiancé, Aidan Gardner, is the son of a tech billionaire, and Frank soon finds himself at an extravagant wedding weekend on a private New Hampshire estate. He’s completely out of place among the ultra-wealthy guests, and something about the whole event feels off. Why hasn’t the groom’s mother left her room? Why does Aidan keep disappearing? And why do the locals harbor so much resentment toward the Gardner family? When someone turns up dead, Frank is left to untangle the sinister web surrounding his daughter’s wedding.
This was such a twisty, compelling read! Frank is prickly, abrasive, and absolutely fascinating. While he’s not the most likable character, by the end of the book, I found myself rooting for him. Every character in this story has their flaws, and at times, I wanted to scream at their decisions. But Rekulak does an incredible job peeling back the layers to reveal each character’s true nature—both good and bad.
The twists kept me guessing until the very end, and I loved how certain details only became clear as the final puzzle pieces fell into place. This book is packed with shocking, jaw-dropping moments that left me reeling.
🎧 About the Audiobook 🎧
John Pirhalla’s narration is solid, especially in capturing Frank’s gruff, no-nonsense personality. However, I wasn’t completely sold on his portrayal of the child character, and I think this story could have benefitted from a full-cast narration to enhance its dramatic and eerie atmosphere.
