This was such a clever and fun mystery! Holly Stars delivers a smart, cozy whodunit set against the vibrant backdrop of drag culture, keeping readers guessing until the very end. While I managed to narrow down the list of suspects by the final chapters, the ultimate reveal was still a satisfying surprise. I also loved how the book weaves educational insights about drag culture seamlessly into the story.
Joe, who is non-binary, has a fascinating dynamic with their drag persona, Misty Divine. Misty is Joe’s source of confidence and power, traits they struggle to embody as Joe. This duality was beautifully explored and added depth to the story. Joe’s relationship with their boyfriend, Miles, was another highlight – Miles is patient, supportive, and unwavering in his concern for Joe’s safety while still being a willing partner in their sleuthing efforts. The book also thoughtfully addresses prejudice faced by drag artists, adding an important layer of social commentary.
It seems this may be the start of a drag queen detective series, and I couldn’t be more excited. Holly Stars has created such a compelling, multi-faceted character in Misty Divine – I can’t wait to see what mysteries she solves next!
