We’ve heard Dorothy’s story in The Wizard of Oz, and even the Wicked Witch’s side in Wicked, but what if the true hero of Oz was a tiny, opinionated, and hilariously sarcastic dog? In Toto, A.J. Hackwith reimagines the classic tale through the perspective of Dorothy’s crafty canine companion.
The story kicks off with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry turning Toto over to animal control after one too many misadventures. But Toto, ever resourceful, escapes and returns to Dorothy’s side just as a storm sweeps them both to the magical land of Oz. What follows is a laugh-out-loud adventure with Toto at the center, torn between his “good dog” and “bad dog” instincts while navigating a world filled with danger, greed, and unexpected friendships.
While much of the original story remains familiar, Hackwith modernizes the tale with sharp wit, fresh motivations, and new layers of depth for the characters we thought we knew. The result is an inventive, heartwarming, and thoroughly entertaining reimagining that adds humor and complexity to a classic. It’s a unique exploration of loyalty, greed, and the power of friendship—all told through the eyes of a dog who might just be the most relatable hero of them all.
The audiobook, narrated by André Santana, is a standout. Santana masterfully captures Toto’s sarcastic tone and sharp humor, bringing the dog’s perspective to life in a way that feels fresh and engaging. His performance makes the familiar tale feel new and exciting, perfectly complementing Hackwith’s inventive writing.
If you’re a fan of retellings with a twist, Toto is a must-read. It’s equal parts hilariou
