Far atop the rocky coastline of Maine sits The Precipice, a famous family-owned boutique hotel. When the patriarch of the Bishop family dies, the family (led by sisters Iris, Vicki, and Faith) converges at their hotel for the reading of the will – and to see what cut of the hotel they each get. To say this family is high maintenance is a vast understatement, a conclusion Charley quickly comes to when they arrive. Charley is the hotel’s live-in maid, and over just a few short days, she will get caught up in all their drama while trying desperately to keep her own a secret because she needs the job – and a massive storm is threatening to make landfall directly over them.

For me, this is one of those perfect, fast-paced summer thrillers that has everything I want – everyone has a secret, no one can be trusted, they’re trapped by circumstances outside their control, someone is tormenting them, the body count is rising, and people are coming unglued. I enjoyed Charley and her sleuthing, her alliances, and the mysteries she uncovered. I guessed a few things, was shocked by others, and just had a lot of fun reading this book.

What’s a book that totally surprised you and why?
