Grave Expectations, a murder mystery infused with magical realism and laced with humor, follows the tale of Chloe, a half-hearted medium, and her lifelong friend, Sophie. While the world believes Sophie to be missing, Chloe is certain of her murder, as Sophie’s ghost has been her constant companion since they were seventeen. The duo is hired to conduct a seance at an aging estate for an 80th birthday party, expecting a routine job. However, they are in for a shock when they discover the house teeming with spirits, one of whom was murdered at the previous year’s celebration. The elderly matriarch tasks Chloe and Sophie with solving the crime. With Chloe’s love for crime shows and Sophie’s ability to pass through walls, they team up with the only two family members they trust – former policeman Sebastian and non-binary teenager Alex. This unconventional group, armed with stolen priests’ clothing, a purple sex toy, and a horde of ghosts, embarks on a journey to solve the crime.

I adored this story! Chloe, Sophie, Bash, and Alex are so strange together but they totally work! It is a good mystery, a great story of found family, and a complex story of the challenges of friendship. I am very excited about book two and incredibly curious about Sophie’s backstory and the events surrounding her murder.
