by Andie Burke – Many thanks to @macmillan.audio for the gifted audiobook copy of this charming neighbors-to-lovers romance.

When the floor of Dylan’s apartment literally collapses, sending him crashing through the ceiling into his downstairs neighbor’s unit at 2 a.m., it’s a near-miss disaster—one that only adds to Derek’s long list of grievances against Dylan. Rather than dealing with insurance claims or the HOA, Dylan volunteers to make the repairs himself. However, the damage turns out to be far more extensive than expected, forcing the two men and Derek’s dog to become reluctant roommates while Derek’s apartment is under renovation. Still mourning a past love that never came to be, Derek harbors resentment toward Dylan for having hurt that person years ago. However, as they navigate the chaos of renovations and the shared responsibility of caring for the dog, Derek realizes he may have misjudged Dylan.

I loved the chaos of the apartment rehab and how it catalyzed bringing Dylan and Derek closer. The slow-burn enemies-to-lovers dynamic was lovely, though the transition from hate to a full-fledged relationship felt a bit rushed toward the end. One of the most compelling aspects of the story was how both characters were carrying emotional baggage related to their families—watching them grow stronger together and offering each other new perspectives on their respective family dynamics was truly heartwarming. The theme of miscommunication plays a big role, but it fits well within the narrative, especially given that poor communication is an ongoing issue within their families. Dylan’s ADHD storyline was a compelling and accurate portrayal of the mental and physical exhaustion that can come with it. It added a layer of emotional depth that resonated strongly throughout the book.

The audiobook’s dual narration by Kyle Omori and Liam DiCosimo is wonderfully done, giving both Derek and Dylan distinct voices and personalities that enrich the overall experience.
