by Kate Canterbary – I just love the way Kate writes. Fans of Grey’s Anatomy will adore this one!
Whitney Aldritch is a dedicated and accomplished transplant surgeon who also leads her hospital’s ethics initiative. Each summer, Whitney and her best friend indulge in a wedding crashing hookup vacation to unwind. This year, Whitney’s final and most memorable one-night stand is with Henry Hazlette. When she returns to train a new cohort of first-year residents, she is shocked to find Henry among them. Despite the undeniable chemistry between them, Whitney’s professional ethics dictate that they cannot pursue a relationship until Henry’s 8-week transplant rotation is over. The result is two tension-filled months where Whitney and Henry navigate their growing attraction, challenge each other’s perspectives, and contemplate the potential for something deeper.
Although I usually shy away from workplace romances involving power imbalances, Canterbary effectively addresses this issue by having Whitney oversee the ethics program, lending a much appreciated subplot to the book. Throughout the story, Whitney and Henry strive to maintain professionalism, even as they face countless close-proximity situations filled with longing looks and brief touches until they can’t resist any longer. One of the highlights is watching them break down each other’s barriers and share hard truths about their behaviors. The supporting characters, including Whitney’s sister and best friend (as well as Henry’s best friend and fellow residents) add layers of humor and tension. It looks like this is the start of a series and I’m really looking forward to it!
