Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is a researcher, a scholar, and one of the worldโ€™s foremost experts on and most fastidious researchers of faeries. She is not, however, a people person. Watching her attempt conversation is physically painful to those around her. So, when she lands in Hrafnsvik to research โ€œThe Hidden Onesโ€ faeries, she knows she needs to keep to the task at hand and not attempt to befriend the community. Then rival academic Wendell Bambleby arrives; he is everything she isnโ€™t – charming, charismatic, and a really bad scholar. Really, really bad. As Emily begins to research the Hidden Ones, she also begins to unravel the mystery of Wendell himself, and soon Emily, Wendell, the townspeople, and the faeries are embroiled in a dangerous adventure that may require more sacrifice than any had planned.

What a CHARMING book! Written as a daily journal with academic footnotes, you canโ€™t help but love Emilyโ€™s haplessness as she attempts to deal with people and her passion for her field of study. You also canโ€™t help but love the oddly dashing Wendell. Amidst all that, an entertaining, mysterious story unravels, and Emily learns that maybe she can connect with people after all.

Thanks to @prhaudio for the free audiobook. The narration is fantastic and shapes the cast of characters in enjoyable ways.
