If you loved The Westing Game or The Inheritance Games, you must read this engrossing book. It was the best part of middle-grade adventure/mystery books that grew into an adult novel but retained all of the whimsy of childhood reading.

The Clock Island book series by Jack Masterson changed Lucy’s life when she was a kid. Now 26 and a teacher’s aide, she shares her love of reading with her students and her passion for Clock Island with Christoper, a student who holds a very special place in Lucy’s heart. Orphaned at a young age, Christopher dreams of Lucy being his mom – and she does, too. But without a car or an apartment of her own, she’d need a miracle to become a viable adoption candidate. Just when she thinks all hope is lost, Lucy is chosen as one of a select group of contestants to travel to Clock Island with the chance to win the only copy of the new Clock Island book from the reclusive author. As Lucy competes in a battle of wits, she realizes they are inside living out a real-world version of a Clock Island book, and Jack is pulling the strings.

I just loved everything about this book. It took me back to why I loved reading in elementary school and added in the complexities of adulthood while reminding us that the best children’s books didn’t always give the kids what they wished for, but rather what they needed. It is a character-driven adventure story that will absolutely capture your heart.
