Cassie is struggling to make it as an artist and about to be evicted from her Chicago apartment when she answers an ad for an inexplicably cheap apartment in a posh neighborhood. The apartmentโ€™s owner (and her new roommate), Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, is a curiosity. It is as if he stepped into the world from 100 years ago: old-fashioned clothes, old-fashioned ways, and a distinct lack of understanding about how to operate in the world. But he is kind, funny, leaves sweet notes, and isnโ€™t around often because he works nights and sleeps during the day. Then, one day, she opens the fridge to find bags and bags of blood. Her roommate doesnโ€™t work nights; he is a vampireโ€ฆand he needs her help.

This book is firmly in the fantasy and rom-com genes and succeeds. From Cassieโ€™s quirky character to Fredrickโ€™s โ€œfish out of waterโ€ bumbling through the 21st century, his unique talents, and the odd side characters, this book is lots of fun. There is no morally gray vampire villain; Fredrick is a total gentleman. There is no subthread of profound personal discovery. However, there are many laughs, and it is an entertaining escape from reality.

For people who have lived in Chicago, there is also something great about a supernatural prison in Naperville. It would explain a lot, honestly.
