Icebreaker was such an unexpectedly fun and thoughtful book that I anxiously awaited Wildfire, the second book in the series. Iβm so relieved that it did not disappoint!
At an end-of-the-year party, reserved Russ and larger-than-life Aurora have a one-night stand, and Aurora bolts before Russ can even learn her full name. Just days later, he arrives at his summer camp counselor job only to discover he will spend his entire summer with fellow camp counselor Aurora…and one of the primary camp rules is no hookups between camp staff members. As they learn more about each other, their relationship and attraction grows, and they help each other gain the confidence to address parts of their lives that have been difficult to acknowledge.
What I love about this book (and Icebreaker) is that, although it is lighthearted, all of the characters have depth. She also writes a male friend group that gives each other shit while talking about feelings and providing unwavering support. It was also fun that this wasnβt a typical second book in a hockey series. It expanded the world of Maple Hills to include new non-college classmates and a world not focused on hockey. The epilogue is one of those great ones where we get to check in on Russ and Aurora and all of the characters, seeing new parts of Nate & Stassie and teasing the futures of others (looking at you, Henry).
