Weyward is a brilliant book told across hundreds of years through the interconnected stories of three women (Altha in 1619, Violet in 1942, and Kate in 2019). It is a powerful story about strong women and the men who try to control them.Β

In 1619, Altha is on trial for murder. She and her mother before her are known for their curious connection to the earth, animals, and insects. In 1942, Violet is handcuffed by the roles women can play in society. In 2019, Kate makes a daring escape from an abusive partner. Magic, a cottage, and a locket tie these women together across time.

I usually am a modern-fiction reader, but combining modern and historical timelines was enjoyable. Without giving too much away, I promise you will become so invested in the stories of each woman. My only critique is that I wish there were more magic and exploration of each woman’s unique powers. In this case, I didn’t think the audiobook was as strong as the print version. I think the three timelines made it harder to follow via audio.

If you love historical fiction, this is the book for you. If you love magical realism, this is the book for you. If you love modern thrillers, this is also the book for you.

As always, I loved reading with The New Girls Book Club, where we read & discuss a new genre every month!
