We first meet Claire Harper and Graham Scott in the novel Would You Rather. In that book, they, along with their best friends Mia and Noah, enter into a marriage pact that they’ll pair off when they turn 40 if they aren’t already married. Although Graham is all-in, Claire does it to make a point that Noah and Mia are secretly in love with each other (they are).

Now, Claire and Graham have been roommates for a year, since Noah and Mia went and got married. Claire says she wasn’t serious about the marriage pact but would agree to a friends-with-benefits pact if they are uncoupled at 40. But, she can’t stop thinking about the pact. Just when they agree to pull the benefits forward to now, Graham is in a devastating climbing accident. As Claire nurses him back to health (she is literally a nurse), their physical and emotional connection grows. The woman who says she won’t date anyone with a dangerous lifestyle and the adrenaline junkie man who says he doesn’t believe in love find themselves on an inevitable crash course.

I love so much about this book but BY FAR my favorite part is the emails Graham writes to Claire’s long-unchecked email account as a way of journaling about his feelings. They are so sincere and with each one you see more of his armor fall. It isn’t necessary to read Would You Rather first, but I’d highly encourage it because both books are great!
