Book: ππππ Audiobook: ππππ Spice: N/A
By Lauren Nosiest
One November day on the campus of the University of Georgia, a fraternity member steps off the curb and is struck and killed by a car. The only things all the witnesses agree upon are that the driver sped up, looked identical to the victim, and was smiling. Detective Marlitt Kaplan grew up on the UGA campus, as her mother is a professor. She also has strong opinions of the Greek system. As she and her partner Teddy investigate the crime, Kaplanβs history with the Greeks causes her to cross many lines in her search for the truth.
This mystery captured many components of university campuses and developed characters you want to meet again (the second Marlitt Kaplan book, The Professor, is out later this year). I liked the story and some of the βwhat is going on?!?!β as the threads of the crime started to come together. As someone who was part of the Greek system, I always struggle with the βvast Greek system corruptionβ storylines because, in my experience, nothing could have been further from the truth, but I recognize that it does exist on some campuses. Regardless of my personal bias, the storyline is intriguing, and I loved the Marlitt/Teddy investigative team!
I both listened to the audiobook and read the hard copy. The book narration is excellent, and the narrator breathed a lot of life into Marlitt.
