Have you ever read a book and everything clicks? This book was one of those rare moments for me. A touching story of friendship, a romance where two delightfully quirky characters help each other discover the best of themselves, a bizarre set of madcap road trip adventures that keep you laughing while swooning, and underpinning it all is the epic love story of Mrs. Nash.

Mrs. Nash recently passed away, and Millie, her roommate/caretaker, is determined to reunite her ashes with her long-lost love. What starts as a straightforward plane trip to Key West becomes a cross-country road trip when all fights are canceled, and her only choice is to join fellow stranded passenger (and her ex’s frenemy) Hollis on the drive to Florida. Car trouble, a broccoli festival, a room full of paint-by-numbers-Jesuses, and so much more await Millie and Hollis.

What could have been a straightforward grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers story becomes much more with Adler’s artful storytelling. The dual storyline between Millie’s present and Mrs. Nash’s past gives depth and weight to the story, while Adler’s narrative skill creates rich, funny, and complex characters. As Millie and Hollis poke the edges of attraction and desire, you root for these two very unique people to find happiness. This book is about love and sorrow, and it is FUNNY. This book is so, so funny.

If you can’t tell, I kinda loved it.
