By Melissa Ferguson
Savannah lives with her sister and sister’s fiancΓ© because she can’t afford rent. Less than a year ago, she had a long-term boyfriend. Oh yeah, that long-term boyfriend is now her sister’s fiancΓ©. And everyone thinks she should be okay with that.
Savannah often seeks refuge in a hidden room within the closet that stores all of the advanced reader copies of Pennington Press novels. She is a mid-level book editor at Pennington Press, a high-brow publishing company that looks down on popular fiction and whose owner despises romance fiction. Savannah is also secretly an aspiring romance novelist on a tight deadline to edit and submit her manuscript to a competing publisher. Amid these competing jobs, Pennington Press gets a new editor – Will Pennington. Will is the owner’s son and comes from one of the best publishing houses in NYC. He is an intense boss but sometimes shows vulnerability and playfulness that endear him to Savannah. One day she hides the manuscript in the tiny room only to discover that someone has provided valuable edits. As the edits continue, they forge a relationship, and she falls in love with her secret editor. But she is also falling for Will. Does she care more for Will or her mysterious editor?
Although the conclusion of this book is telegraphed, Savannah is a more complex character than you’d anticipate from this book. My favorite part of the book is her complicated relationship with her sister, ex-boyfriend, and parents. The arc she goes through to decide what she is worth and what she deserves is very satisfying. Overall, this sweet, light romance would serve as a delightful (although not particularly memorable) pallet cleanser after an intense book. You’ll root for Savannah and Will and love their charming happily ever after in this closed-door romance.
