Oh, wow. There are great books and then books that take your breath away because they are so great. This is one of those rare books. It does indeed live up to ALL of the hype. It has a fast-paced, compelling story, a cast of thoughtfully developed characters, drama, intrigue, levity, dragons, romance, and the best nickname.

General Sorrengail’s daughter Violet has trained her whole life to be a scribe, recording the history of her world. Then, her mother decides Violet will be conscripted to the dragon riders – the elite warrior section of the war college – despite her fragile frame and lack of training. Everyone, including Violet, believes it to be a death sentence. Having already lost her father and brother, Violet knows sorrow. However, over time, Violet finds her own way to succeed. Xaden Riorson is two years ahead of her at the War College and is known to be the best of the dragon riders. He is also dangerous and untrustworthy. As training gets more challenging and their ranks diminish, the tests grow more dangerous, and Violet begins to question the truths she has been taught and who is really an ally.

Every page of this book and minute of the audiobook is delightful. Once you pick it up, you will not want to stop reading. As you see Violet grow stronger, her connection with dragons grow, her attraction to Xaden spark, and her talents begin to take shape, you root for her. You also get pulled into an epic world of intrigue where trust is hard to come by. A unique and epic read with a cliffhanger that will leave you itching for the next book!
