When I picked this up, it sounded like a nice little mystery book, but I got an intricate puzzle box of a plot that I cannot stop thinking about.

Four strangers are at the same table in the Boston Public Library reading room when a scream echoes through the hall. While forced to stay seated during a search, they forge a bond. Later, they learn that a body was discovered in an adjacent room. Through their shared desire to solve the crime, friendships deepen, questions emerge, and readers face numerous quandaries.

At a certain point in the book, I paused, realizing that I had been paying attention to all of the wrong things. Without giving too much away, throughout the novel, I made a case that every single character could have done it and absolutely could not have done it. This is partially due to the way the bookโ€™s narrative structure folds in on itself. Even after I finished, I still aim unsure if I read a book, a book about writing a book, or something in between. Nevertheless, I will think about this story and its characters for a long time.
