Growing up, I fondly remember watching BBC crime series with my parents. They were usually based outside of London with a whip-smart but troubled female lead, a host of not-as-smart-as-her detectives, and a grizzly crime that was somehow tempered by the idyllic setting. That’s what this book felt like to me.

Mariana is a group therapist battling her own trauma from the tragic events that took her husband’s life. When her niece’s best friend is murdered at Cambridge (her alma mater and where she met her husband), Mariana returns to the university. As the body count rises, Mariana becomes fixated on Professor Edward Fosca, whom she is convinced is at the center of the murders of these young women.

This is a twisty novel by the author of The Silent Patient. Although not quite the same jaw-dropping experience, I really enjoyed this book and how the pieces come together unexpectedly. The events in this book occur before The Silent Patient, but there is cross-over between some of the characters, which was a fun and unexpected surprise.

If you liked The Rule of Four or In My Dreams I Hold a Knife, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
