Book: ππππ Audiobook: ππππ
By Sarah Penner
The year is 1973, and Lenna Wickes sister, Evie, has died a violent death in London. Lena travels to France to seek the teachings and guidance of Evieβs spiritualist mentor, the world-renowned spiritualist Vaudeline DβAllaire. Lena hopes to learn enough spiritualism to help discover who killed her sister. However, a powerful, high-profile death brings both Lenna and Vaudeline to London, where they must navigate the mysterious Seance Society through secrets and sexism. As they delve more into the society, they realize Evieβs death may be connected to the society.
This is a fast-paced read about two talented, tenacious women committed to uncovering the truth as well as the integrity of their craft. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and how Penner brought you into the complexities of womanhood in the 1800s. The world of spiritualism was fascinating, and the back-and-forth throughout the book – where until close to the end, I wasnβt sure if it was real or all a hoax – was incredibly enjoyable. As we reach the final, breathtaking chapters of the book, we get the answer, and the end is deeply, cruelly, and surprisingly satisfying.
