Book: ππππ Audiobook: πππ
By Freida McFadden
I was excited to dive into this one based on so many 5π reviews. I decided to listen to it on audiobook. That was six weeks ago. I struggled so hard to finish the audiobook because I found the voices for each character, particularly Millie, to be really distracting. I finally switched to print and restarted. Once I was reading the physical book, it was much more enjoyable. Although I still found some of it to be relatively predictable, I definitely see the appeal and it was a fun read.
Recently out of prison and living in her car, Millie is in desperate need of a new job. When she interviews for a housemaid position with Nina and Andrew, it feels almost too good to be true. Sheβs ecstatic to get the job and although her bedroom is a cot in the attic, it still beats her car. Things devolve quickly when she discovers that Nina is THE WORST boss and kinda crazy. She cannot understand why calm, kind Andrew puts up with this level of crazy. Then she discovers that her bedroom door only locks from the outside and she is being locked in at night.
In this terrifying psychological thriller, Millie must figure out how to extricate herself from this nightmare when she has nowhere else to go and no-one to trust.
Although the first half was slow, the second part got much more twisty and interesting. I liked it, but didnβt love it.
