In the equally funny follow-up to Fool Me Once, Ashley Winstead allows us to reconnect with the characters from Fool Me Once while shifting the focus to Lee’s little sister Alexis.

When Alexis decides to take a walk on the wilder-than-her side and have a meaningless one-night stand with a stranger, things don’t go as planned, and she’s caught in compromising photos with the handsome stranger she talked for hours with at the bar. Unbeknownst to her, that handsome stranger is the Democratic candidate for Texas governor. So to protect the campaign, they agree to fake dating until the election ends.

Alexis is a quiet rule-following school librarian who always puts the dreams and needs of others ahead of her own. Logan is a walking contradiction – a Texas democrat, a Harvard-educated son of poor immigrant farming parents, and a cursing, straight-talking politician. Despite their differences, Alexis and Logan might be lightening in a bottle personally and professionally.

Like Lee and Ben in Fool Me Once, I could feel the Alexis/Logan banter and the connection it creates between them. Although the book is through the POV of Alexis, both main characters have an arc of growth and an epiphany about who they want to be and how they want to live their lives. A laugh-filled joy to read!
